Siem Reap Khmer Literature Festival

October 20th

I signed up to spend my entire weekend at an event, which was located in Siem Reap called Khmer Literature Festival. It was a really fascinating event to be a part of. I met lots of both young and old writers as well as poets coming together to share about works they had done. There were lots of interesting books that were being shown at the festival. Listening to writers’ experiences, I really feel like they were so inspiring and some speeches were really got me shifted me onto thinking about writing my own book too. As I heard, stories that were written were really related to author’s real life or an actual person’s life. Besides books, there was a circus show during the event as well, which I enjoyed a lot. I was also glad to see the art performance that was done by a Cambodian grandpa that was at about his 70s. The performance was like a tail that was told from generation to generation, so he was acting as various characters using different voices.

I am also proud to share my opinion about this first-ever event that was being held for its first time in Siem Reap as well.

Animation Description

Name of course: Animation

Learning Facilitator: Sothea

Number of students: 12

Course Description:

Drawing plays a huge role in animation. Animators require drawing as part of their background. There were so many drawing tips that were taught to us. We practiced drawing various pictures of things like human, animals, plants and so on. I found it tough, but I knew that it wasn’t impossible. Besides drawing in class, we were all required to draw 20 drawings per week of anything we want to further our skills. We also had a trip to iThinkAsia, which is an animation studio to get an idea of the animation process. After I’ve done all of these work, I know how difficult it was to animate a movie that could entertain the entire world since there were so many artworks, sounds, and designs involved in the process. To publish a movie that is about an hour long could take animators years to do it.

Geographic Information System – GIS

September 29th,  2017

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a project that I am currently a part of. Within the project, we will be off campus every Friday and spend an hour and a half to learn about geographic mapping. Before entering the course, when I think of map I could only think of a big piece of paper that represents geography. Besides what I learned in GIS, a map is not just a piece of paper that represents geography, but it also shows informant about places as well. It could be pictures or a written history that could give researchers more ideas about the geography.  In class,  also learned how to use a software called ArcMap, which allows me to create my own map.

Trip to iThinkAsia

iThinkAsia is an animation studio that is located in Phnom Penh. This was part of the Animation exploration that I had involved in. We went there to learn about the process of animation as well as to get a sense of what animators around the world do to get their animated project out for the world to see. At there, we also learned about an animated program called Opentoonz, where we were required to animate a bouncing ball motion. I enjoyed it a lot and I found it really interesting that within a movie that us, the audiences don’t even pay attention to it, but there was so many other knowledge that is required for a movie to make things seems real with physics related to a motion of an object.

AOUGCC – Frisbee Tournament – Philippines

I started to join a frisbee team in January. I practiced three hours in the afternoon every Sunday. It was exhausted and required lots of commitment to the training. Through my efforts, I was selected for to be in the national Cambodian ultimate frisbee team to participate in frisbee competition in Manila. It was challenging, but I committed to myself that I can do it. I told myself that I will make it. After three months, I was in Manila playing in a mixed women and men team. It was not as comfortable being in an international competition for the first time playing against many players who had played for years. We didn’t win any game, but we tried our best to play. Even though our team got so many young and less experienced player, but we learned a lot from the experience.

Resourceful Week

August 10th, 2017

At the earliest week of school, we had a day for a resourceful work. We were required to complete three tasks. One of them was to talk to a man who could make 60 Flag Football belts for Liger. Negotiate with him like choosing colors and adjust the sizes. Our second mission was to pick up Money Tree books on behalf of our teacher, Keith. Lastly, we also need to find the price and figure a place that Chickpeas were sold. I was in a team of five. We didn’t know where to go at first, but then from the use of map and research, we had successfully completed our mission. By this experience, we as a team learned how to be independent when adults weren’t around. We also learned to make sure that we were all safe as well divide jobs, so everyone that everyone has a role.
